The application is metal sheets powder coating as producer samplers in small series – 10-100 pcs.
The special flat gantry DLE-FG-001028 was configured for this application. It is dust resistant and lubricant-free.
The igus Robot Control unit enables simple point-to-point programming with easy speed adjustment and the software enables free visualisation of the process offline, before testing the real robot. Digital output controls the gun ON/OFF and the additional motor control unit is used for self-made rotary external axis, which can be easily configured.
No programming skills were required – just a few hours training for software!

It takes ~1:30 min to coat one metal sheet. The operator had to paint metal sheets manually with powder gun. It was hard to get constant layer thickness on the whole series as the operator gets tired. It requires an experienced operator to get acceptable results at all.
Another problem was changing the powder type – it requires speed adjustment, because of the different powder parameters. So the operator has to learn how to paint again everytime the powder changes.

The gantry robot doesnt get tired. Can work 24/7. Always keeps constant and repeatable accelerations, path and speed, so the quality of product gets better. It results in fewer complaints.
The operator doesnt need to be trained in details in coating process anymore. He just needs to choose the right program for the right size of the sheet and for the right powder type and press START button.
